Two midterms came, one was conquered (I think), and the other…well, I’ll have to fight that battle another day. The 4100 midterm was thoroughly nasty and quite long. In fact I didn’t finish. I anticipate dropping the course tomorrow afternoon after I pick up my grades. Amazingly enough, the professor says that they’ll be ready by noon, which would make for the fastest grading I’ve seen yet and this is for a heavily essay test. It’s too bad. The upshot to all this is that I feel very good about my second Statistics exam. The professor tries his best to make things tricky with problems that require a combination two or three different techniques. I think I handled it well though. I as afraid I would run out of time but I actually finished early.

Titus and I got to sit down and watch another great episode (#4) from season two of “You’re Under Arrest!” for the first time in a few days. I also watched another episode (#5) of “Wolf’s Rain.” It was one of those quirky recap episodes.

I also received a nice little package from my Aunt Kathy. She’s so thoughtful!

Spent a good 11 hours on campus today: 3 hours of classes, 1 hour of a review session, and the rest studying Statistics. So now I’m thoroughly sick of binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions and it’s still not done. To make matters worse, I’ve spent all that time studying Statistics and almost none of it studying for Computer Architecture, which needs just as much attention.

It’s quiet around here tonight. Titus and Nicky are both gone somewhere so there’s no one to moan and groan to. Guess all I can do now is go back to studying. Seems like that’s all there is to life of late.

Watched “Wolf’s Rain” over late night Taco Bell.

It’s only looking worse from here… Posted September 23, 2003 at 12:00 am

Spent much of the morning analyzing simulator output to quickly patch together a servicable report for my Advanced Computer Architecture (ECE 4100) course. I’m thinking of dropping the course. I don’t feel like I can devote the kind of time I need to keep up in the course without making sacrifices elsewhere. That would, of course, just mean more crunching in future terms and I’m loathe to make things more difficult for my future self if it can be reasonably avoided.

Starting studying for a pending Statistics (ISYE 3770) test, which happens to fall on the same day as a 4100 test. I’m feeling almost certain that I won’t be able to cover everything for Statistics and still have any reasonable amount of time to prepare for 4100 as well. On a lighter note, I watched another thoroughly enjoyable fansub of “Scrapped Princess” (#22) over my usual monster-salad fare.

Long day in a long week Posted September 22, 2003 at 12:00 am

I got my combinatorics test back and I wasn’t thrilled with the results. It was passable but I was expecting much better. It turns out I completely screwed up the easiest problem on the test, simple combinations (e.g. n choose k).

Took my first VLSI midterm and came away feeling confident, which is good on a week as hectic as this one.

After VLSI, I waited around until 1:30 PM to meet with an academic advisor and nail down all the courses I have remaing and realistically how those will break down over the next few semesters. I’m going to try to graduate by the end of 2004 without taking a summer term if I can help it.

I also met with my databases group to discuss our project some more.
